Abstract: In this paper, the mechanical properties, in vitro degrades and cytotoxicity of Mg–4.0Zn–0.2Ca alloy were studied. The extruded Mg–4.0Zn–0.2Ca alloy exhibited peak strength of 297 MPa, yield strength of 240 Mpa, elongation of 21.3% and elastic modulus of 45 GPa, respectively. After 30 days immersion in SBF solutions, the values of the yield strength, the ultimate tensile strength, the elongation and the elastic modulus of the alloy were degraded to 160 MPa, 220 MPa, 8.5% and 40 GPa respectively. It is still enough for bone fixed. The in vitro corrosion test in the simulated body fluid (SBF) revealed that the addition of Zn and Ca into Mg matrix could enhance the corrosion potential and reduced the degradation rate. In vitro cytotoxicity of the alloy was disclosed that Mg–4.0Zn–0.2Ca alloy has suitable biocompatibility.
